Inauguration Day happens every four years on January 20th (or January 21st if January 20th falls on a Sunday). The ceremony takes place at the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, DC. The next presidential inauguration is scheduled to be on January 20th, 2025, for president-elect Donald Trump.
How will president-elect Donald Trump get inaugurated?
The vice-president-elect is sworn in first and recites the following oath:
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”
Around noon, the president-elect recites the following oath:
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

73 or 79 days after the presidential election, the president-elect of the United States is inaugurated as president by taking the presidential oath of office. The inauguration takes place for each new presidential term, even if the president is continuing in office for another term.
When a president has assumed office during a term, the inauguration ceremony has to be done without any excess attention or excitement. To facilitate a quick presidential transition, the new president takes the oath of office in a simple ceremony and often addresses the nation afterward. This has happened nine times in United States history: eight times after the previous president had died while in office, once after the previous president had resigned.
