Did you know that Blaine’s boys’ varsity soccer team has a 4-year streak! Catharine Blaine has multiple different sports like Volleyball, Track, Soccer, Basketball, and Ultimate Frisbee. Today we will be focusing on boys soccer. Mr. Self –the current coach- has brought both the girl and boys varsity teams to multiple championships. Let’s ask him a few questions!
What makes your team special? “Surprisingly this team has jelled quickly and has proven to come together and play as authentic team without individual egos getting in the way of the team.”
Why do you think you are so successful right now? “First off, let’s be honest we haven’t played the toughest teams so far. However, players have worked really well together and brought a real positive and fun attitude to practices and a strong, competitive drive during games.”
Which games do you think will be the toughest? And why? “Every game has been a surprise so far, so it is unpredictable. However, I get a strong sense that our last game of the year against hazel wolf will be a doozy.”
If a student wanted to support the team, what games should they go to? “If we make the playoffs, it will be great for people to come out May 24th to our game, and obviously if we are in the final on June 7th that would be fantastic.”
We also interviewed a couple of players on the team, Oliver GC, Leo, Xander, and Michael who are all on the boy’s soccer team. We asked them….
- Why do you love soccer?
- What do you like about this team?
- How long have you been playing soccer?
Oliver said….
- “Uhh because of my dad, he never finished being a soccer player so I’m carrying on his legacy to finish.”
- “My teammates are my friends, and I get to work with my classmates.”
- “Since I was 3 or something like that.”
Leo said….
- “Because you get to kick the ball.”
- “The people on the team are really cool. I can elaborate by saying that they are fun people to play with.”
- ”4 years.”
Xander said….
- “Bonding with my team.”
- “How we are all different in our own ways but, we are still good.”
- “Since I was 3, so 9 years.”
Michael said….
- “Having fun/ scoring a goal.”
- “The amount of talent on the team.”
- “11 years.”
The team’s next game is 5/24/25, 10am, at Robert Eagle Staff Middle School. Come support the team on Saturday!
If you are in Elementary school, middle school sports are a fun outside of school thing to do with friends and is a fun way to get involved with Blaine!
