Should the majority of people who signed up for the sport be able to pick the jerseys? This year there was a decision on what the new volleyball jerseys should be and there were mixed feelings about how it went. I had interviewed 2 students about their opinions on this.
Three kids in leadership who played volleyball were asked to help narrow down the options for the new jerseys at the beginning of the 2nd semester.
The first person I interviewed on this topic is an 8th grader Adele! Adele says that,
“I Agree with what you are saying, and I feel that if only some people pick it there will be some conflict with what jerseys we will pick. The sports team that is signed up should be able to choose the new jerseys.”
The second person I interviewed on this topic is an 8th grader, Vayuna! She said that “I 100% agree with what you are talking about because, most people on the team are not happy with what the final product is on the new jerseys. We are the ones wearing it.” I feel that we should be able to pick the jerseys that we wear because, we are the ones wearing it and we should be able to feel comfortable in what we are wearing. The majority of people who signed up should be able to choose the new jerseys that we pick for middle school sports teams.”
It’s clear from both Adele and Vayuna’s responses that they feel strongly about giving the players more control over the jersey decision. They both agree that the team members are the ones who should have the final say because they are the ones who will actually be wearing the jerseys. After all, it’s only fair that the people representing the school in those jerseys should be happy with how they look and feel.
It seems that letting most of the team choose the jerseys would be the fairest way to do it. If everyone gets to vote on a design they like, it will help avoid arguments and make sure the majority of players are happy with the final decision. Plus, when everyone has a say, it shows that their opinions matter.
So, what should be done next time? Maybe the team could vote on their favorite design, or a group of players could work with the leadership team to make sure everyone gets a say. Either way, it seems like letting the majority of the team pick the jerseys would be the best way to avoid conflict and make sure everyone feels comfortable in what they’re wearing.
