With Seattle’s professional baseball team officially out of the playoffs, we interviewed students and teachers about their opinions on this news and the Mariners’ performance.
The Seattle Mariners are a beloved team in the Seattle community. Although the Mariners lost in the ALCS against the Blue Jays, diehard fans have not lost hope. Seattle is confident the Mariners will exceed their expectations and hopefully one day win the world series. It is very clear that Blaine students and teachers support their city’s professional baseball team and were deeply disappointed after their elimination in the playoffs. We interviewed some of those diehard fans at Blaine, and these were their opinions about the loss and games in general.
“Are you disappointed that the Mariners are out of the playoffs?”-Teagan (8th)
“A little bit, but I’m very proud of them. I think they will win the world series next year in the power of Julio, Cal, and Polanco.”-Hiatt (8th)
“How often do you go to Mariner games?”-Teagan (8th)
“My dad got season tickets when they came to town in 1977, so I grew up going to Mariners games. And now we have season tickets with them so we go as often as we can, and we love baseball, we are a baseball family.”-Ms. Torcaso
It seems like our fellow Tigers are confident in the Mariners’ ability to make it to the playoffs again next year. Hopefully the Mariners come out of the gates with lots of wins during the regular season to make this happen. Our fingers are crossed. Now I want to ask you,
“Do you think the Mariners will win the playoffs next year?”-Teagan, (8th)
A lot of people love baseball, especially since we live in Seattle. Many love the Mariners, but I found plenty of middle schoolers who hate the Mariners and think they are an awful team who deserves no support. I went around to different classrooms and talked to some of your fellow classmates about their feelings towards the Mariners.
“I’m not shocked they did not make it to the world series and wouldn’t be if they never do.”-Alexis, (7th)
It is clear that Alexis has zero feelings towards the Mariners. Did you know, the Mariners are the only team who have ever made it to the world series? This is most likely why many people do not like them or think they are a bad team. Another reason I found that people do not like baseball is because games are too, can be boring, or are just hard to understand.
Even though a lot of people have strong opinions about baseball, a lot of people don’t have any opinions or support other teams besides the Mariners. We interviewed some of your classmates about their reasons for being neutral about this topic.
Based on our statistics, one of the main reasons people don’t have opinions on baseball is because they don’t watch it. One example of this is Isaac (8th) who when asked about his opinion said,
“My family just doesn’t watch, so I don’t really watch it.”
Another reason people don’t have opinions about baseball is because they prefer other sports. An example of this is Micah (8th) who said,
“Baseball is so slow. …I watch ice hockey instead, it’s so much better and things happen, unlike baseball.”
Some people though do have opinions about baseball; they just root for other teams besides the Seattle Mariners. Some examples of this are Annie (8th) and Sophie (7th) who said this when asked about their preferred teams,
“We like the Savannah Bananas because they’re so much more fun than the MLB, and they’re bananas.” Another example is Reese (7th) who talked about her love for the Phillies.
So, after all those opinions, hopefully you can see why others might not favor Seattle’s favorite team.
“So, what is your favorite baseball team?”-Eloise, (8th)
