Blaine Wins for Third Year in a Row

Blaine boys varsity soccer team won both games this past weekend to claim the district championship. This is the second year in a row that Blaine has lifted the trophy. The team went undefeated this season and did not suffer a single loss. The team won each game to claim victory in all seven that they played. The first playoff game on the road to the finals was against Broadview.

Blaine defeated Broadview three-one in the regular season. Blaine came into the game as favorites to win again. The first half was extremely tense with neither team able to break through the other’s defensive lines. However, thanks to a halftime pep talk by Coach Self, Blaine came out into the second half strong and scored! The team went on to control the remainder of the game, winning three-zero.

This win meant Blaine secured a spot in the finals against Hazel Wolf who had won their game earlier in the morning. Hazel Wolf thrashed their opponents, scoring more than five goals.

Blaine against Hazel Wolf was the closest game of the season. Ben scored first for Blaine with a beautiful strike. Ben’s goal came from a great pass by Jonny.

Blaine’s second goal was scored by Jonny from the PK spot. Ben was on the breakaway when he was taken down from behind by a defender. The defender received a red card and Blaine was awarded a penalty kick. Jonny scored to put Blaine up two zero.

However, the red card seemed to pump up Hazel Wolf. The anger and frustration sparked life into the losing team, and they started to go on the attack. Hazel Wolf scored a goal and kept momentum going with them.

Hazel Wolf scored a second goal to equalize off of a corner kick. Although, because of a great refereeing decision, the goal was called back because of a push on Joe (Blaine’s goalie). Blaine was able to defend their lead for the rest of the game. Congratulations!
