Some of the most extravagant art pieces are in museums, but have you ever seen them on the red carpet? The first of May is the night that all celebrities will remember. The met gala is one of the most apprehensive events in the fashion world. Celebrities including influencers, actors, designers, and fashion fanatics all come together every year at the Museum of Art in New York City to celebrate the opening of the Costumes Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. The met gala is most known for the most iconic looks in fashion.  

    The met gala traces all the way back to 1948 when it was established by Elanor Rambert as a fundraiser. The gala was one of the many annual benefits for the New York charitable institutions, having the first dinner tickets costing $50 dollars. It was initially for the New York “high society” or the fashion industry. But progressively got more expensive. To attend the gala, you have to be invited, based on our personal status, solo tickets cost 50,000 dollars and table tickets cost 275,000. Today the met gala. 

    The met gala is known for its absurd outfits and themes. Every year the met gala has a theme that people dress according to. In the past there have been themes “like rock” style in 1999 and “the house of Chanel” in 2005. While this year’s gala was “in honor of Karl” which was an honor of the German fashion designer who is known for becoming the chief designer of Chanel in 1983. Many people dressed in outfits he made or one under the channel. For example, Dua Lipa and Margot Robbie both wore outfits by Chanel nailing the theme for this year. But as you may think that the met gala is known for its elegant outfits, but this year the singer Doja Cat, rapper Lil Nas X and Jerad Letto all took 2023 met gala to the next level. Doja wore a silver jeweled gown adding face prosthetics to make him look like a cat, and Jerad Leto fully wore a full cat costume from head to toe. This was definitely one of the most memorable galas yet!

The met gala is an important part of the fashion industry and will continue to be. It showcases the highest fashion from around the world and provides a platform where artists, celebrities, and designers come together to celebrate. And some of the most beautiful pieces of art (clothing) are at the met gala. The event is inspiring for many to express themselves with their outfits and for a good cause by funding the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute.
